BECOME A C.S.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A C.S?

C.S is short for ‘Certified Site’. A camp site which becomes a C.S is allowed to run under a Camping Club’s paragraph 5, Camping and Caravan Exemption Certificate. All club Exemption Certificates are awarded by Natural England.

All clubs that offer C.S cover, hold exactly the same Exemption Certificates with exactly the same permissions, but within that, they often have different requirements in line with their own club’s style and constitution.

This can cover size, style, allocation, advertising, and fees for membership and certification and anything else they might like to specify.

SANCTUARY CAMPING CLUB CERTIFIED SITES

When a guest stays on any one of our certified sites, they automatically become Sanctuary Camping Club members. Membership is currently FREE and open to everyone.

Whether you manage or stay on one of our certified sites, the club’s Constitution and code of conduct are the foundation of our agreement.

It’s not complicated and in a nutshell it boils down to respect for the countryside, the seashore, the environment and each other.

We don’t mind how you advertise your site, but your guests must be aware that they become members as soon as they book.

Everyone benefits. It protects us, you and them knowing that there is a level of responsible and respectful conduct required. That’s great for the environment because most of all, that’s what we’re trying to protect.

WHAT EXACTLY CAN A C.S. DO?

In all cases, we’ll state the number of pitches and the frequency of use based on the size of your site, the environmental impact, the road usage leading to your site and the proximity of your neighbours.

As a Sanctuary Camping Club C.S, you will be able to offer:

  • Up to 5 all year round caravan or camper van pitches – with no single pitch occupied continuously for longer than 28 days by any one booking.

OR

  • Up to 5 all year round bell tent type pitches – with no single pitch occupied continuously for longer than 28 days by any one booking.

OR

  • A mixture of the above

AND

  • Seasonal tent, caravan and camper van touring pitches for club members – Again we ask that no pitch is occupied by the same booking for more than 28 consecutive days.

  •  Unlimited 5 day Sanctuary Camping Club members only rallies –  within the guidelines we specify depending on your environment, size and location..

Any close neighbouring properties to your site are extremely important to us. Their enjoyment of their own home is of prime importance so their opinions may determine what we can allow you to offer.

We’ll also consider the proximity of any neighbouring livestock when we agree your pitch allocation and placement.

IT'S YOUR STYLE THAT MATTERS, NOT OURS.

You don’t need a perfectly flat or manicured site.

There is no minimum size.

We definitely don’t specify what style or age of camping shelters you host and in fact, we do not tolerate discrimination.

Depending on the size of your site, you may not even need any amenities.

We LOVE quirky and imaginative so that’s never a problem!

It’s easy to develop your own style by the image you portray through your advertising.

As long as what you offer is a non-exclusive site and you are happy to adopt our constitution, code of conduct and site rules, then it’s entirely up to you!

We can help with this in all sorts of ways and help ensure that your ideas stay within our environmental policies.

SIZE MATTERS....

Pitches must have a minimum of a 6 metre wide access track and be no less than 3 metres apart. This is partly how we determine the maximum number we can allow on your site.
We don’t believe in overcrowded campsites for a whole host of reasons, so you’ll need to leave a very generously sized recreational area.
Tents pitches should be separated from camper vans and caravans unless of course they are all part of the same camp. This is for safety and comfort.
Your 5, all year round pitches with whatever quirky, temporary accommodation you care to dream up, need to be clearly separated from any other pitches that you offer.

You must also hold Public Liability insurance for your site with minimum £2m cover. This sounds a lot but it’s actually only standard cover. You can wait until we agree to certify your site before you arrange insurance but we won’t issue any certificates until your policy is in place.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO BECOME A C.S.?

Certification by the Sanctuary Camping Club costs £110 per year. That’s it, one simple fee!

That’s our flat fee for each site no matter how many options you choose to offer or what size your site is.

  • You can have as much FREE advice and support as you want for setting up your site and developing it –  We’re happy to advise you on listings, advertising and basic business support.

  • A FREE listing on ‘Our Sanctuaries’ page – including a one-click link to your own website.

  • Cover by whichever of our club certificates are relevant for your site activities.

  • FREE advice and support on how to keep your carbon footprint down by adopting sustainability and bio-diversity.

  • FREE ideas, we’re great with those and we’re very generous!

You must let us know immediately in the unlikely event that you receive any complaints so that between us, we can respond and hopefully find a solution.

The only other fee that we hope you will never incur, is if we investigate a complaint and find that you have deliberately violated your Certificate permissions or the Sanctuary Camping Club’s constitution or code of conduct.

We will take that very seriously and you may find yourself with a bill for up to £500.

You will also permanently lose your status as a certified site.

All the permissions that we agree with you, will be clearly written down so there will never be any worry if you haven’t done anything wrong.

OPTIONAL BOLT ON EXTRAS

Campsites are as unique as people. You may want more than just certificates.

You may already be set up as a C.S. with another club and fancy a change. You may have some previous experience or you might have absolutely no idea of what running a campsite involves.

We’re happy to help, or not…. it’s entirely up to you. As long as you operate within our constitution and code of conduct, we’re happy.

We offer lots of free support and advice, but you might want  more hands on involvement. As well as creating your own full page listing on our website, we can build you your own website. We can offer professional design, business or environmental advice. We can be extremely hands on and turn your waste materials and objects into facilities for your campsite.

OUR KEY TERMS AND CONDITIONS

We want the Sanctuary Camping Club to be as fair to, and supportive of it’s members as possible.

We’re always open to suggestions and opinions so we welcome you to get in touch if there’s anything you feel we could improve.

Below, are the links to the things you will be agreeing to when you join us.

A full version of our Constitution and Code of Conduct can be found here.

A shorter outline version can be found here.

Any Certificate issued is valid for 1 year.

The fee per site is the same regardless of what options you offer or how big your site is.

If you have more than 1 site, the fee applies to each site. (A single unit of land sub-divided to meet Paragraph 5 exemptions and to separate tents from caravans is counted as one site.)

  • When you are issued a certificate, you will become a Sanctuary Camping Club Warden member and  you will accept the Sanctuary Camping Club Constitution and Code of Conduct.

  • When we agree to issue a certificate for land that you own or have been given written permission to use, you agree to abide by the number of pitches and the duration of activities that we have determined are suitable. If you want to add any more to your agreed allocation, please feel welcome to ask as we understand that circumstances change or you may want a one-off rally. There is no fee for changing your allocation.

  • Each site must have its own Public Liability Insurance to cover £2,000,000 which we will need to see before any certificates are issued. (This sounds a lot but it’s now standard cover.) You’re more than welcome to wait until we’ve agreed to issue certificates before you start this.

  • Your status as a Sanctuary Camping Club C.S need to be displayed on your site in a prominent location showing our logo and contact details. We will provide you with a poster that you can print out in A4 size to display as an easy option.

  • You must submit full descriptions of all proposals for themed rallies. We only support non-sectarian camp sites however, we also understand that there may be occasions when for example, same sex or celebratory religious or cultural rallies are required. We’re happy to help you ensure that your theme doesn’t contravene our equality policies.

  • Any complaints about either your site or the club must be responded to and investigated immediately which includes contacting us with full details and keeping us copied into any correspondence and informed of any discussions.

  • If we feel that either you or your site are contravening any rules of the Sanctuary Camping Club Constitution and / or Code of Conduct, we will issue no more than 2 warnings, if any, before we revoke your certificate.

  • Under violations against the Club’s equality policies we may revoke your certificate immediately.

  • In any situation where we revoke  certificates due to the club’s Constitution or Code of Conduct being contravened, we will not be held liable in any way for any subsequent losses incurred by any member in any way.

WHAT A C.S CANNOT DO.

Any and all camping clubs that hold exemption certificates awarded by Natural England, can exempt their own Certified Sites from requiring certain planning permissions when they make land available for recreational camping within Natural England’s own specific guidelines.

Apart from that use of land as a recreational camping ground, no other development that would ordinarily require planning permission in the UK, can be bypassed.

Fixed pods and facilities, raised platforms, engineered services and roadways,  to identify just a few, are not exempted and will still require planning permission.

A FEW THINGS THAT SANCTUARY CAMPING CLUB WILL NOT SUPPORT

  • Anything, any behaviour or anyone that contravenes our core Club Policy of equality. All people are equal. It doesn’t mater what colour, race, religion, culture or level of ability they are, we expect everyone to be treated with respect and kindness. If we have any reason to suspect this rule is being violated, including through hate speech, and by any officer or member of the club, we will revoke your certificate with immediate effect. It’s that simple.

  • We will only support nonsectarian camping grounds and rallies. We do however, also understand that there may be occasions when for example, same sex or celebratory religious or cultural rallies are required. You must submit full descriptions of all themed rallies and we’re happy to help ensure your theme doesn’t contravene our equality policies.

  • We wont support any site that does not separate waste unless you’ have an exceptionally small site that we have determined does not necessarily need to provide any bins at all.

  • We cannot support any site that has multiple neighbours with valid opposition to its location.

  • We do not support party sites or loud sites that welcome large groups of people and amplified music. We don’t feel that this sits well within The Countryside or Seashore Code.

  • We don’t support any sites that use non-organic weed killers and fertilizers.

  • All dogs must be on leads at all times on all of our sites, for the comfort and safety of other dogs, their owners, children and anyone else who might be nervous around unrestrained dogs.

  • We can’t support your site if there has been or is any kind of enforcement action on your site.

  • Proposed sites can not be subject to a direction under Article 4 of the 1995 Order.
